The Minor Arcana
The Minor Arcana are the 56 cards that deal with everyday life: what you want, what you feel, what you think and what you are actually building.
They may be called “minor”, but relationships, confidence, work, money and boundaries rarely feel minor when you are living them.
What is the Minor Arcana?
The Minor Arcana is divided into four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. Each suit contains fourteen cards: Ace through Ten, followed by the Page, Knight, Queen and King.
Where the Major Arcana tends to reveal the larger lesson, the Minor Arcana shows how that lesson is playing out in your calendar, conversations, habits and choices. It is the difference between knowing you need stronger boundaries and noticing that you have agreed to organise another thing you do not have time for.
These cards are practical. They help you identify the energy in a situation, see how it is developing and decide what to do next.
The four suits and their modern meanings
Each suit is traditionally connected to an element. The element gives you a quick way to understand what kind of experience the card is describing.
What the numbers mean
The numbered cards show energy moving through a cycle. You do not need to memorise ten unrelated definitions for every suit. Learn the pattern of the numbers, then notice how it behaves through Fire, Water, Air or Earth.
A Five often introduces tension, but the tension looks different in each suit. The Five of Wands may show competition, the Five of Cups grief, the Five of Swords conflict and the Five of Pentacles hardship. Same stage of the cycle; different part of life.
Understanding the court cards
The Page, Knight, Queen and King can represent a person, a role, a behaviour or a quality you are developing. They are not a casting call for four literal people who are about to appear on cue.
Curiosity, learning, messages and the courage to be a beginner.
Pursuit, movement and the way an energy behaves when it wants results.
Inner authority, maturity and the ability to embody the suit’s power.
Direction, responsibility and the outward leadership of the suit.
Queens are not reserved for women and Kings are not reserved for men. The court shows a relationship with power, not a gender rule. Read what the figure is doing with the suit’s energy before deciding who it represents.
What multiple suits mean in a reading
The balance of suits can tell you where the reading’s energy is concentrated.
- Lots of Wands: strong momentum, ambition or pressure to act. Check whether enthusiasm is becoming burnout.
- Lots of Cups: feelings and relationships are leading. Make room for emotion without letting it rewrite the facts.
- Lots of Swords: decisions, communication or mental strain need attention. Clarity matters; so does leaving the argument occasionally.
- Lots of Pentacles: practical security, work, health or resources are central. Look at what is sustainable, not merely impressive.
An absent suit can be useful too. No Cups in a relationship reading may suggest feelings are not being acknowledged. No Pentacles in a career reading may show plenty of ideas but very little practical structure. Treat absence as a question, not a fixed verdict.
Reading Minor Arcana reversals
A reversed Minor card may show its energy blocked, delayed, internalised or pushed too far. The Eight of Wands reversed can slow movement or scramble communication. The Queen of Cups reversed may point to emotional overwhelm, weak boundaries or care that has forgotten to include you.
Do not automatically flip the upright meaning into its most miserable opposite. Ask what is out of balance, what is being avoided and what would bring the energy back into a healthier form.

The Minor Arcana is not less important because it deals with ordinary life. Your repeated everyday choices become the larger chapter eventually.
Small cards can reveal big patterns. The point is not to make every moment dramatic. It is to notice where you still have influence before the situation requires a Tower to get your attention.
How to read a Minor Arcana card
- Identify the suit. Is this about action, emotion, thought or practical reality?
- Notice the number or court role. What stage of the story are you looking at?
- Return to the question. The same card behaves differently in love, career and personal-growth readings.
- Check the surrounding suits. Are they supporting the energy, challenging it or revealing what is missing?
- Choose a practical response. Name the conversation, boundary, plan or pause the card is prompting.
